Who Are We

Cornhusker Power is your connection to service. The 2,250 square-mile service area of Cornhusker Public Power District is centered in east central Nebraska's rich farming country. Cornhusker Power is a non-profit electric distribution system which provides low-cost electricity to rural portions of Platte, Colfax, Boone, Nance, Greeley and Wheeler counties (see map of coverage area). Headquarters are in Columbus where 25 percent of the beef in the United States is slaughtered within a 100 mile-radius. Nearly 9,000 customers are supplied with electricity for their residence, industry or agricultural commercial purpose. The hog industry is rapidly growing in Cornhusker's area. Rich soil and abundant water supply aid a consistently high annual agricultural production.

Cornhusker's large industrial customers receive outstanding service and low-cost power rates that are among the lowest in the nation. Fortune 500 companies have recently located in Cornhusker's area, in part because of our outstanding service.

Benefits of Public Power

Cornhusker Power is a non-profit political subdivision of the State of Nebraska. Because Nebraska is the only state in the nation that is 100 percent public power, electric rates are much lower than the national average.

Local Ownership - Customers control the district which means local control and low-cost electricity for consumers. A board of 10 directors is elected during the general election. These directors live in the district and protect the rights of the customers they represent. Because there are no stockholders, Cornhusker is continuously reinvesting in the system.

Community Involvement - Cornhusker Power is dedicated to programs such as economic development, safety programs for schools, taking photos of purple ribbon 4-H and FFA exhibitors, Cornhusker Power Goodwill Fund and Community Builders.

Low Rates - Cornhusker Public Power District rates continue to be among the lowest in the country according to a report, Key Ratio Trend Analysis, which compares financial information from 818 rural electric utilities throughout the United States. Cornhusker Power's rank in the U.S. non-profit public power districts and cooperatives is 726 out of 818, with 818 being the lowest. Cornhusker’s average rate is 6.15¢ compared to the national median of 7.73¢.  Cornhusker is in the lowest 11% compared to 818 other non-profit rural electrics.  The National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation, CFC, compiles this report annually.

In the State of Nebraska, Cornhusker ranks 26th lowest out of 30 or 13% below the state average. The state’s median cost of power is 7.09¢.

General Manager Ron Hostetter said, “I am very proud of the stability of Cornhusker Power’s rates.  Rates at Cornhusker are 20% below the national average.  Our employees work hard at keeping expenses low.  They treat Cornhusker’s money like their own.”

Reliable Service - Reliability of service is important to our customers. We take pride in keeping the lights on, despite Nebraska’s harsh weather. Over the last five years, we’ve been able to provide 99.9% reliability.
