Cornhusker Community Builders
It isn't enough for a town to have good leadership.
Communities also must have people - Community Builders
- who vigorously encourage and support a wide range
of activities which benefit the community. These builders
aren't self-serving. They're interested in improving
and perpetuating their communities. Find a community
with both leaders and builders and you'll find a community
that works. Dr. Robert Manley.
What Is Community Builders?
People aren't born into the role of Community Builders.
They are developed and brought along through a well-defined
process. The process strives to provide citizens with
necessary skills and information to support economic
development activities in their communities and increase
citizen participation in the activities.
Up Close
Cornhusker Community Builders are people who are interested in building
their community. They live in Platte, Boone, Nance, and Colfax counties.
The group meets four times a year to learn about the communities in the
region; meet individuals and find out how they solve small-town problems;
and learn about resources available. Each meeting begins with a town tour
at 5 p.m., followed by dinner. After-dinner discussions focus on specific
community and regional issues as well as local business and community
success stories. Resource people who attend meetings make themselves available
for question and answer sessions. By 8:30 p.m. we're finished for the
evening. Last year 45 to 60 people attended each time.
The Process
By participating in Community Builders you will:
- Gain a better understanding of your community and
its future
- Learn how to identify community capacities; access
appropriate development programs; and involve others
in economic and community development programs
- Work with neighboring communities in regional growth
and development
